Adding another illustrious chapter to the rich tapestry of Andaman Islands' history is its pivotal role in India's struggle for independence. The archipelago bears witness to a myriad of significant events that continue to be cherished and celebrated to this day.
One such momentous occasion is commemorated at the flag point, an emblem of profound historical significance. It was here, on the 30th of December 1943, that Netaji Subash Chandra Bose unfurled the Indian flag for the very first time on Indian soil. This poignant act symbolized the indomitable spirit of the freedom struggle.
Today, standing majestically at an elevation of 150 feet in the South Point area of Port Blair, is a towering flagpole, an enduring testament to this historic event. Visible from afar, it serves as a beacon of national pride, with the Indian tricolor unfurling gracefully atop it.
In a poignant tribute to this monumental occasion, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi himself raised the Indian flag at the flag point on its inauguration day, the 30th of December 2018. This gesture marked the 75th anniversary of the Azad Hind Government and honored the legacy of the first flag hoisting on Indian soil.
